I’m a writer, journalist and the author of Lucía the Luchadora, named one of the best books of 2017 by NPR, Kirkus, Chicago Public Library and more. I’ve written essays for The Atlantic, commentaries for NPR’s All Things Considered and am an alum of the VONA/Voices writer’s fiction workshop. I’ve worked as a reporter for several newspapers, including the Houston Chronicle and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. I graduated from Rice University and have a Master’s from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
I was born and raised in South Texas and currently live with my husband and two young daughters in Nairobi, Kenya. Lucía the Luchadora and the Million Masks will debut in October 2018.
And now that all that official bio stuff is out of the way, here’s a fun Q&A, if you really wanna know more “About Cynthia”:
- What’s your favorite food? Tacos. Tacos. Tacos. Tacos forever and ever.
- If you could ask your pet 3 questions, what would they be? Why do you like to pee on my nice, new rugs; why do you like to eat shoes but not tortillas; and do you remember your original family?
- What’s your favorite holiday? Christmas!!! My husband started this wonderful tradition of making one-song Christmas Day videos of our kids from the moment they wake up, and it’s just the most perfect, magical day of the year.
- Tell me 3 things you remember about kindergarten. Sitting on the carpet all the time, this one girl who sat next to me who always told incredible, fantastic stories and lies and that one time in the bathroom when I thought I had forgotten to put on underwear, and freaked out. I didn’t, they were just hiding in my overalls!
- Cake or pie? Italian cream cake with extremely, disgustingly rich cream cheese frosting. I clearly have a type.
- If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? I’d like to make it to Ethiopia, Rwanda, Egypt and Oman in the next few years.
- Would you rather be the most popular kid in school or the smartest kid in school? I was my high school valedictorian, so guess that answers the question.
- What’s your dream job? Being a writer. Lucky me.
